• Step 1

Warning: You may wish to wear thick gloves that are heat and water protective as the water needs to be really hot.

Once you've burned your candle to the end, place it into a bowl of boiling hot water from the kettle for a few minutes (or until the wax starts to melt slightly round the edge of the jar). The hot water will heat the jar, causing the remaining wax to slowly melt. Your candle should be submerged up to the rim. We suggest you place it into the bowl before pouring in the water.

  • Step 2

Get a spoon or knife and carefully use it to remove your chunk of wax. If there is very little wax left in the bottom (and it's not a "chunk") you'll just need to lightly scrape the leftover wax and sustainer from the bottom and sides and dispose of it. You will need to scrape the wick sticker from the bottom of the jar too as this will be stuck to the bottom.

  • Step 3

First pour boiling hot water into the jar. Carefully swill it round the jar, which will melt any wax residue and remove any wax left on the sides and bottom. Pour out the water. Repeat this step a few times if necessary until the wax is gone. Clean your empty candle jar with washing up liquid and boiling hot water. You may wish to wear thick gloves that are heat and water protective as the water needs to be really hot. Leave the jar to dry. Importantly do not add washing up liquid or scrub the jar unless the jar has no wax and unless the water is really hot, or the remaining wax will just congeal and make a mess.

Place your refill into your candle jar. To buy refills click here

  • Step 5

It is now ready to light and enjoy!

  • Step 5 Alternative

If you don't want to reuse it as a candle you can even just pop a cute plant inside and use it as a plant pot! The jars are waterproof. We just ask that you don't put them in the dishwasher!
